  • Members of the Hamilton Community and visitors welcome
  • Maps and atlases may be borrowed for short periods for teaching and classroom presentations
  • Requests for loans should be made at least 24 hours in advance, to allow time for laminating
  • Interlibrary loan of maps can be arranged directly through the Curator
  • Interlibrary loan of atlases can be arranged through the Library's Interlending and Document Supply Section

RARE MAPS

Rare Maps Held in Research Collections, McMaster University Library
Just a beginning, but eventually we will include all of the rare maps in our collection. Includes indexes by date, cartographer, title and geographic area, and also images of some of the maps.
McMaster has received two marvellous donations of rare maps this year:
  • The Banks Rare Map Collection
  • The Hodsoll Rare Map Collection
World War I Military Map Collection
A finding aid to our collection of military and trench maps, held in the Lloyd Reeds Map Collection and in Research Collections.
TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS

  • Detailed topographic cover of Ontario, Canada, U.S. States adjacent to the Great Lakes, and Britain.
  • Cover of Europe and the rest of the world at various scales.
       
GENERAL MAPS
 
  • Geographical and political maps of all countries.
  • Campus Maps for Canadian Universities
  • Paper maps of many campuses are also available.

ATLASES
 
  • World, national, provincial and thematic atlases, historic and modern.
  • Atlases and books in the Map Collection are listed in our Library Catalogue.

GEOLOGY AND SOILS

  • Extensive cover of Ontario and Canada, and many other parts of the world.

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

HISTORIC MAPS
 
  • Both originals and reproductions of maps of Wentworth County historical interest.
  • Town plans of Canada, U.S. and Europe.
  • Fire insurance plans of Hamilton and other cities
  • Reproductions of many early maps of Canada and North America.
RECREATION
 
  • Maps for travel, fishing, orienteering, canoeing and other recreational activities.
  • Hydrographic charts of Canadian waters.

DIGITAL INFORMATION

  • Computer-based atlases, including several current world atlases (Times World Map and Database, Maps 'n' Facts) and an historical atlas of Europe (Centennia).
  • Ontario Base Maps of the local area, maps and data produced by the Ecowise Research Group, demonstration files of the 1991 and 1996 Census of Canada for the Hamilton area, and other projects are available as GIS coverages for ArcView software.
  • Federal topographic maps (National Topographic Data Base) and digital elevation files (Canadian Digital Elevation Data)
