About the Map Collection

Lloyd Reeds Map Collection is primarily a reference, rather than a lending, collection. Maps may be borrowed for short periods, for teaching and classroom presentations, with the permission of the Map Specialist. Atlases and reference materials do not circulate, and may be used in the Map Collection area.


Topographic Maps

  • The Map Collection has detailed topographic cover of Ontario, Canada, Britain and some U.S. states, as well as cover of Europe and the rest of the world at various scales. Visit the Map Collection to view these.
  • Canadian topographic maps are also available for viewing at Toporama http://atlas.nrcan.gc.ca/site/english/maps/topo/map
  • Digital copies of current edition Canadian topographic maps (CanVec data) can be downloaded from the GeoGratis website in ESRI shapefile format or as Raster images in .tif and .pdf formats.

General Maps

Atlases

  • The Map Collection has current and historical world, national and provincial atlases displaying both physical and thematic content.
  • Atlases and books in the Map Collection are listed in the Library Catalogue

  • The Map Collection has extensive cover of Ontario and Canada, and many other parts of the world

Environmental Studies

Historic Maps

The Map Collection has the following resources:

  • Both originals and reproductions of maps of Wentworth County historical interest
  • Town plans of Canada, U.S. and Europe
  • Fire insurance plans of Hamilton and other cities
  • Reproductions of many early maps of Canada and North America

Rare maps are housed in Research Collections: 

Recreation

  • The Map Collection has maps for travel, fishing, orienteering, canoeing and other recreational activities
  • Hydrographic charts of Canadian waters

Genealogical Research

  • The Map Collection has gazetteers of many countries, place name and city directories, and historical atlases of Ontario counties

  • The Map Collection can provide small outline maps for inclusion in essays

  • Bibliographies, indexes, catalogues of other map collections
  • Books on map interpretation and cartographic conventions
