Status of Materials
The following status terms appear in McMaster's library catalogue. An explanation and action is provided for each status item below.

| Check shelf | Item is available for manual loan. Status only applies to some periodicals in Thode Library. | Find item in location indicated. To borrow, bring item to Thode Library Services Desk (1st floor). |
| Checked in | Item should be on the shelf at the location given or in the reshelving area on that floor. | If the item cannot be found on the shelf, submit an unable to locate form and staff will conduct a search and notify you of the result. |
| Checked out | Item has been checked out by another borrower. | Item can be recalled and held for you to pick up ( for 5 days). Items on reserve cannot be recalled. |
| For use in library only | Item is available for use in the library but cannot be checked out. | Available for use in the library at the location given. |
| Fragile: ask at desk | Item is in poor condition and is shelved in a restricted area. | Submit request at the Library Services Desk (approx. 1-2 days). |
| In library access | Item is available only on public computers in Mills, Innis and Thode libraries, via a CD ROM network. | On a public computer in Mills, Innis or Thode Library, click on the Windows start button; click Programs; select the relevant database or product title. |
| In process | Item has been acquired or purchased by the library and is currently being catalogued. | Place request to be notified when item has been processed (approx. 2-3 days). |
| In transit | Item has been checked in at another library at McMaster and is on its way back to the library which owns the book. | Item can be requested and held for you to pick up (approx. 2-3 days). |
| Item being held | Item is being held for someone to pick up and check it out. | Place a recall for this item. It may be placed on reserve for a period of time so that multiple borrowers may use the item. |
| Item hold expired | Item was being held for a borrower who recalled it, but has not been picked up. Item will be returned to the bookstacks (usually by the next day). | Check in the bookstacks. If not there, ask at the Library Services Desk. |
| Item missing | Item is currently missing from the collection. | Item can be requested through Interlibrary Loan Services if no other copies are owned . |
| Lost | Item has been reported lost or is checked out and has gone to the long-overdue billing stage. | Item can be requested through Interlibrary Loan Services if no other copies are owned. |
| Network Library | The journal is held by one of the community health or hospital libraries in the Hamilton & District Health Library Network. Note the Collection name attached to the title. | Place an interlibrary loan request in RACER, or go in person to the library owning the title and consult it there (phone in advance of visiting). Check the Hamilton & District Health Library Network list for more information about the library. Contact the Information Desk at the Health Sciences Library if you have any questions (905-525-9140 ext 22327). |
| On order | A purchase order has been placed for this item. | Place request to be notified when item is available (Length of time varies) . |
| Online access | Access to this title is available online. | Click on the URL in the Library Catalogue record. You may be prompted for your MAC ID or LibAccess user name and password. |
| Recalled item | Item has been recalled from the current borrower for another person. | Place a recall for this item. It may be placed on reserve for a period of time so that multiple borrowers may use the item. |

| Retrieve from Thode storage - for use in Library only | Item has been shelved in storage location due to low usage. Item is non-circulating. | Place request to have item retrieved from storage (approx. 1-2 days). |
