Forster, E. M., 1879-1970

E. M. Forster collection. -- 1931-1946. -- 14 letters.

E. M. (Edward Morgan) Forster was born in London on 1 January 1879 and educated at Tonbridge School and King's College, Cambridge. His first novel, Where Angels Fear to Tread, was published in 1905; one of his best novels, A Passage to India, which won both the Femina Vie-Heureuse and James Tait Black prizes, was published in 1924. Forster was awarded the Order of Merit on his ninetieth birthday.

The collection consists of letters to Reginald Popham Nicholson (1874-1950) and his wife, Mary Elinor Nicholson. Nicholson was a career foreign service officer. After his retirement he became the secretary of the Royal African Society and editor of its journal from 1932-1938 and then served in the Red Cross Foreign Relations Department, 1941-1943.
